DAY 1
i’m sam’s mom here in austin for the first time in thirty years, checking out sxsw. not that there WAS a sxsw back then, we were just a bunch trashed college students in search of a good band ( i should say a BETTER band because as i recall, the music in the seventies was pretty much all good or was it the drugs? no no it was the music).
we started out on 6th street, the epicenter of sxsw, at PARADISE for some drinks and to coordinate our evening. as luck would have it the band that we really wanted to see was a block away at BOURBON ROCKS, so we didn’t have too far to stumble.
the bar was at overflow all there to see VIET NAM and the band did not disappoint. they were amazing. the club had an open air backyard so you could hang out under the stars and take in the musical mastery.
while the Austin of my youth has long ago been buried under by a host of applebees, hiltons and starbucks, sxsw proves that music is what makes this town great. walking down 6th street last night soaking in the vibe as well as all the different notes spilling out from all the venues could not have been better (well actually a cold shiner bock would have helped, crappy open container laws here in austin still claim my brother as one of their victims after a rather nasty run in years ago with a bicycle cop).
the evening ended with a chauffer driven foray through the finest mickey dees in north austin. the cab driver was not amused. man those chicken wraps taste so good at 4 a.m.
thats it for now!
